Figures printed in the Telegraph have shown that the average weekly rent for university-owned accommodation has risen dramatically from £59.17 to £117.67 since 2001/2002. The data released by the National Union of Students also reveals a significant difference between different regions, with the most expensive university flats in London amounting to more than £415 per week! On average it was found that rents across university owned and private halls have increased by 25% since 2009.
In light of the recent statistics, there have been fresh fears that these soaring costs may price many undergraduates out of university accommodation altogether, with the basic student loan going little way towards the cost of living.
With a strong commitment to saving readers money, the payday loan specialists at Dosh Express reacted to the news with interest. A representative shares their thoughts on the matter.
“This news may seem alarming to prospective students, or parents of those thinking about going to university, however there are ways to make these costs more manageable. The most important advice would be to look around. Even different rooms within the same halls of residence can vary greatly in price. Selecting a self-catering room without an en-suite for example can make a real difference to monthly outgoings.
“With energy bills famously on the rise, it is also important to look into whether these are included within your accommodation fees. It’s worth taking the time to work out whether it would be cheaper to arrange this separately or not. If you think it would, be sure to check around for the best deals.”
Those particularly concerned about the costs of university accommodation may choose to live at home and travel in.
