Holiday Travel Calendar 2012
Christmas remains one of the key moments for British tourism

London, UK (PRWEB UK) 15 November 2012

Though British travellers are becoming increasingly accustomed to planning their holidays at the last minute, when it comes to Christmas holidays the majority book in advance to take advantage of pre-sale deals. According to eDreams, one of Europe’s leading online travel agencies, you can save up to 50% by booking in advance. Because of this, many Brits have already booked their flights to spend their holidays in cities like Bangkok, New York, and Sofia; popular destinations for flights out of the United Kingdom and Northern Ireland during the upcoming Christmas season.

The wide range of activities and cultural events that big cities offer increase during the holiday season, making them popular destinations this Christmas and New Year. The demand for these cities is evident in the recent ranking carried out by eDreams, as all 10 of the top cities are larger metropolitans. However, there is a split when it comes to choosing warmer or cooler metropolitan cities. Temperate destinations, in the mid and high 20s (°C) during December, are slightly more popular as Bangkok, Johannesburg, Sydney, Orlando, Dubai and Cape Town have taken 6 out of 10 positions on the list. The cooler destinations chosen for the holidays are New York, Sofia, and Bucharest, ranked as the second, third, and fourth most popular destinations, and Lisbon the sixth most popular.

The list shows that Brits catching flights during the holiday season are going global, with Bangkok being the number one destination, and looking outside of the UK to spend Christmas as there is not one British city in the top 10. A little over a quarter of British travellers are staying within Europe for the holidays, while 74% are heading cross-continent to Asia, North America, Africa, and Australia, regardless of the higher prices attributed to long-haul flights.

According to eDreams co-founder and Chief Marketing Officer, Mauricio Prieto, “purchasing in advance makes it easier to find better prices with different companies, so changing habits and planning trips more in advance can help our wallet”. In Prieto’s words, “with enough time you can compare all the deals in the market to find the best price and take advantage of the savings that come with pre-sales, which together with the possibility to combine your trip with different airline companies and be flexible in the destination selection and dates, ensures significant savings”.

Despite this, the majority of travellers have chosen to depart before Christmas Eve. Specifically, close to 20% have chosen Saturday, 22 December to take off for their destination and few wait until the day of New Year’s Eve to fly.

The airlines chosen vary depending on the destination. However, despite the economic crisis in Europe and the popularity of low cost carriers, the airlines that will transport more passengers this Christmas season are not the budget airlines, but the traditional companies. The only exception to this is easyJet, which is the only low cost airline to make it on the top 5 list along with British Airways, KLM, Lufthansa, and Air France. The UK’s flag carrier, British Airways, is the number one pick for flights to our top 10 destinations this Christmas.

Prieto also emphasizes the importance of Christmas for the tourism sector. “Although the seasonality of the online travel industry is not as pronounced in our agency compared to other companies specializing in travel, Christmas remains one of the key moments for British tourism”, as much so as the summer season. However, “the global trend is to have periods of holiday and leisure more spread throughout the year”, which involves frequent travel for shorter periods.
