With money tighter than ever, it’s important to keep track of household finances and work out a monthly budgeting plan so you can handle all your outgoings and avoid any nasty surprises.

A new survey has revealed that the average British family needs £24,801.51 every year to cover essential costs such as mortgage or rent, utilities, insurance, food, petrol, phone bills and clothing.
To have that amount as disposable income after tax and national insurance, a family would have to earn over £30,000 a year.
The survey of 2,000 people by Skipton Financial Services revealed that mortgages were the biggest cost, with an average yearly cost of £4,514.88. Food was second costing £4,491.24 per year, followed by petrol at £2,667.
The figure has increased by £129.35 compared to last year, and the research excluded luxuries such as holidays, meals out and unplanned shopping.
