Following on from the launch of their Eurostar breaks in November last year, the city breaks tour operator, Superbreak, launched a Top Gear style race pitting the Eurostar trains against air travel in a race to central Paris.
The event which took place on the 22nd February 2012 saw the two teams set off from the Superbreak offices in York; the teams each consisted of a member of Superbreak staff, a Travel Agent and a reporter from the Travel Trade Gazette. Team 1, lead by Superbreak’s National Sales Manager Graham Balmforth along with Steve Allerston from Holiday Travel in Bridlington and a TTG Reporter travelled via Eurostar while Team 2, lead by Superbreak’s Head of Overseas and Ancillary Product & Contracting, Chris Hagan, along with Gail Smithson Tui Regional Manager for TEESSIDE and a TTG Reported travelled via plane from Newcastle Airport.
Using only public transport each team set off for Paris with the first team to reach a bar at the Eiffel Tower the winners. Team 1 heading to London and the Eurostar Terminal while Team 2 headed to Newcastle Airport. The race was neck and neck but the Eurostar team won with a final journey time of 6 Hours, 20 Minutes and 15 Seconds.
Superbreak has a range of Eurostar breaks to continental Europe offering quick and easy transport direct to key city break locations, including Paris, Lille, Brussels and Disneyland Pars as well as onward travel to a number of destinations across Europe. Since the launch of Eurostar breaks last year, sales have been encouraging with Bruges, Brussels and Paris the most popular destinations to date. What helps set the company apart from its competitors is the ability to add on a rail journey from any UK mainline station.
Superbreak National Sales Manager Graham Balmforth commented: "The race was a fun way of highlighting the ease and speed of a short break to the continent via our Eurostar packages with travel from any UK rail station......and now with flight options also available via our Superbreak call centre, we really do offer our customers a one stop short break booking service".
