Ruggerbeez Announce 'Bee Sporty' Programme to Encourage Top Brands, Youth Coaches, Children and Local Boroughs to Play Together to Raise Sports Participation Targets

The BEE SPORTY project is all about challenging young people aged 16-25 to learn valuable sports coaching skills ‘on the job’ by volunteering to coach at local ruggerbeez and wannabeez events held across London to encourage sports participation in the community. At the same time, BEE SPORTY is about professional coach mentors (cricket, rugby, tennis, football, etc) volunteering to work alongside young people in wannabeez clubs, sharing their skills and running guided learning activities. Top brands are also encouraged to participate in supplying kit where possible.

BEE SPORTY plays particularly well to the government’s Big Society agenda. Firstly it shows that businesses have a wide range of things to offer their communities, beyond the simple contribution of cash. The businesses involved in BEE SPORTY (A4e, Wannabeez) are offering their people, products and resources, as well as their skills and experience. Secondly, the young people will be encouraged to use their newly acquired skills for community benefit. Finally, the whole project is an interesting example of how a range of partners can come together to solve a problem worth solving.

BEE SPORTY is also very relevant to youth unemployment, which is another key challenge facing the government. The majority of BEE SPORTY participants are not currently in education, employment or training, and the scheme aims to raise their employability.

The aim of the initial pilot in Battersea Park in October 2012 is to prove the delivery model and help secure further support and funding from public and private sector sources to roll out the scheme across London and the UK in the second half of 2013 and beyond.
