2012 was a landmark year for Harneys in Hong Kong and it is appropriate as 2013 dawns that we begin on another high with the relocation of one of the strongest BVI transactional lawyers fielded by any firm.

Harney Westwood & Riegels is pleased to announce that its global head of banking and finance, Colin Riegels, has relocated to the firm’s Hong Kong office. The transfer together with other recent recruitment brings to 24 the number of lawyers in the firm’s Hong Kong office and makes Harneys the second largest of the offshore magic circle in that city.
Colin is one of the British Virgin Islands’ leading experts on offshore financing transactions. Recommended by all three of the leading independent legal directories, Colin has been involved in many of the largest ever financing transactions involving BVI vehicles, including a number of multi-billion dollar debt financing transactions. He also regularly advises on a wide range of corporate and commercial matters including mergers and acquisitions, joint ventures and corporate restructurings including a number of multi-billion dollar joint ventures. He is co-editor of British Virgin Islands Commercial Law, the definitive textbook on BVI commercial law and practice published by Sweet & Maxwell.
Managing Partner of Harneys in Asia Jonathan Culshaw said:
“2012 was a landmark year for Harneys’ Hong Kong office and it is appropriate as 2013 dawns that we begin on another high with the relocation to our busy Asia hub of one of the strongest BVI transactional lawyers fielded by any firm. Combining deep knowledge of common law and an almost photographic recall of the various BVI commercial statutes with an ability to give rapid and commercial advice, for many clients Colin is the go-to-lawyer for the most complex BVI finance and corporate transactions.”
Before joining Harneys in 1999, Colin practised as a barrister in London. He was formerly a judicial assistant (clerk) to Lord Woolf MR in the English Court of Appeal, and taught law at Oxford University. He is described as “a fantastic lawyer” by Chambers Global and described as having “excellent business acumen” by Legal 500.
Colin joins Lisa Pearce and Timothy Bridges as partners who have recently joined Harneys in Hong Kong. The firm has made expansion of its flagship Asia office a strategic priority and in addition to investment funds, banking and finance, and corporate lawyers the firm’s Hong Kong office houses a rapidly-growing litigation practice.
