Do women even want to be on the board? New Research by Aspire Coaching & Training Ltd seems to suggest no.

The growth of women in leadership positions is like watching paint dry very, very slowly.

Much is written to explore what can be done about getting women to the top with much recent debate about quotas for women. Yet one fundamental factor is NOT being addressed. Do women actually want to be at the most senior levels of their organizations?

The ASPIRE Women in Leadership 2013 Report: “Should I Stay or Should I Go? The State of Play for Women in Leadership 2013" is based on a survey completed by more than 1400 global female leaders. This annual survey conducted by Aspire, an award-winning leader in workshops, coaching and events with specific expertise in regard to women as leaders, is now in its ninth year.

Women are now the main breadwinner
A staggering 66.5% of women are the main financial earner in their household and 66.7% of women work well over 40 hours per week. This increased responsibility means that women have less perceived choice about their career and family options.

Sheer Workload is the number 1 challenge
Women state their top work based challenges to be 1) Sheer workload, 2) What to do next in career and 3) Balancing work and home. These factors are often in conflict and hinder women’s ability to be strategic and visionary in their roles and lives.

Women are not aspiring to the board
61.6% of women do NOT want to be on a board or don’t know if they want to be on a board of an organization. Yet women are extremely ambitious with over 72% wanting to be in a more senior position, do something that gives back or become an entrepreneur. Women are also NOT saying family is the only reason that they do not aspire to the board, they want unconscious bias at the top level tackled now and they want support in confidence, self belief and leadership training.

Until these challenges are solved, women will continue not to aspire to leadership positions. This is a critical issue for business and society as more women in senior positions makes business, economic and ethical sense.
