The latest data from Experian Hitwise has revealed that Google’s share of the search market dropped below 90% for the second month in a row to 88% in December, its lowest point for five years.

Google’s share of the search market was down 0.77% month on month and 2.80% year on year. While Google still dominates the search engine market in the UK, the data shows that Microsoft and Yahoo sites are beginning to claw back some market share. Microsoft was up 0.19% month on month and 1.15% year on year, while Yahoo was up 0.08% month on month and 0.86% year on year.

The data also revealed that UK internet users made 2.7 billion visits search engines in December 2012, an increase of 400m visits compared to December 2011.

Ben Austin, Managing Director at SEO Positive, has responded to the data with interest:

“While Google still retains the majority of the search market and is likely to for some time, it is interesting to see that other search engines are starting to claw their way back into the market. With the integration of Microsoft’s Bing on Facebook’s newly launched graph search, we may see these numbers begin to rise and change.

“With search engine visits vastly up in December for the Christmas season, it highlights just how important integrating SEO into your business’s website is, helping you draw in custom and be noticed above the competition.”
