Root Balled Plants for Winter, with English Woodlands
(PRWEB UK) 19 December 2013 -- Gardening is by no means a static pursuit, and different opportunities and challenges present themselves throughout the year, providing savvy planters with plenty of chances to maximise their results, and establish new plants effectively.
This winter, English Woodlands are looking to promote one area in particular, rootballed evergreen plants. From November to March most UK plants are dormant, requiring minimal intake of energy and becoming eligible for easy transportation, storage, and planting. In contrast, evergreen plants never enter a full state of dormancy, and are instead provided with a protective ball of soil around the root system, which insulates and protects the roots for safer, easier planting of larger specimens.
Visitors to the site can find English Woodlands supporting winter gardeners with the release of a new advice series via the company blog. This entry is intended to flesh out the company’s previous series, which covered bare root planting, trench digging, and choosing a hedge.
The new series provides a number of details on rootballed plants, including an explanation of how and why they’re made, such as being cheaper than containerised plants, yet often more mature, and simpler to store and plant throughout the entire winter season compared to bare root plants. The company also shares tips on hedge spacing for maximum coverage and density, alongside a brief account of two of the most popular rootballed hedging specimens available this year.
These are Thuja plicata (Western Red Cedar) and Taxus baccata (Yew). Both produce immensely dense hedges, complete with dark, glossy leaves and are commonly put to use as striking boundaries in strictly pruned, ornamental gardens.
