In the trial, a Mediterranean diet supplemented with either extra-virgin olive oil or nuts resulted in a relative risk reduction of approximately 30% amongst high-risk persons who were initially free of cardiovascular disease.
Eligible participants were men between 55 and 80 years of age and women between 60 and 80 years of age with either type 2 diabetes or at least three of the following major risk factors: smoking, hypertension, high LDL cholesterol, low HDL cholesterol, overweight or obese, or with a family history of premature coronary heart disease.
The results support the benefits of the Mediterranean diet for cardiovascular risk reduction.
