Harrogate Ladies’ College has announced the appointment of Mrs Sylvia Brett as its new Principal. Mrs Brett, who is currently Deputy Head at Roedean School, will take up her post at the start of the new academic year in September 2013.

The announcement follows the appointment of Harrogate Ladies’ College’s current Principal, Mrs Rhiannon Wilkinson, as the next Headmistress of Wycombe Abbey independent boarding school for girls.

Sylvia Brett is a graduate of Durham University and has an MA from the University of London. She has previous teaching experience at Caldicott Boys’ Preparatory School and Downe House girls’ school in Berkshire, where she was Head of Lower School. She has also served as a Governor of St Aubyn’s prep school in Sussex. Mrs Brett moved to Roedean – a globally-renowned day and boarding school for girls – as Deputy Head in 2008.

Making the announcement, Mrs Sarah Pullan, Chair of Governors at Harrogate Ladies’ College, said: “We were incredibly impressed by what Sylvia Brett has achieved and her ideas to build on the positive changes and developments at Harrogate Ladies’ College that Rhiannon Wilkinson has put in place. We believe that Mrs Brett’s strong leadership skills will enable her to inspire pupils and staff alike in developing an environment of lifelong learning.”

The growth of pupil numbers at Harrogate Ladies’ College in recent years has put the school on a firm financial footing and enabled significant investment in infrastructure. A new Assembly Hall and a fully-equipped Business School have been opened alongside a programme of continuous school refurbishment. The school roll now comprises more than 600 pupils across the main girls’ school and its co-educational Pre-Prep and Prep Schools.

Sylvia Brett is married to Justin, who is a Classics teacher and a member of the General Synod of the Church of England and they have a nine year old daughter. The family will be moving to Harrogate in summer 2013.

Sylvia Brett says: “From my first visit to Harrogate Ladies’ College I have been overwhelmed by the warmth of the welcome, the straightforward approach and genuine commitment of everyone I meet to ensuring the best possible experience for the pupils. My family and I are very excited about coming to Yorkshire and I look forward to working with the whole school community to continue the development of Harrogate Ladies’ College so that it goes from strength to strength.”
