UK Healthcare Provides Financial Support to Tommy’s Pregnancy Health Charity
UK (PRWEB UK) 3 July 2013 -- Tommy’s, a major British charity providing pregnancy health information and research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, has benefitted from a charitable donation by health cash plan provider UK Healthcare.
The funding will support research into the relationship between the placenta and still birth, which is currently being carried out in Tommy’s Manchester research centre. The goal of the project is to develop a new test which will accurately identify the women most at risk of still birth, based upon telltale problems within the placenta. It is an extremely important project, but just one of the many which the Tommy’s charity is currently carrying out.
One in four UK women will suffer the heartbreak of a losing a baby, yet little government funding is available for research into the cause and prevention of pregnancy health conditions.
With centres of excellence in London, Manchester and Edinburgh, Tommy’s leads the way in maternal and foetal research. By improving clinical practices, changing behaviours and providing expectant mothers with free information and support, Tommy’s is helping more and more women to enjoy healthy pregnancies; and in turn is saving young lives.
Without their invaluable services, young women like Claire Duggan might never have experienced the joy of motherhood. Tragically, Claire lost four babies, to miscarriage or stillbirth, because of a problem with her placenta. But with the help and support of the Tommy’s charity, Claire was finally able to give birth to a health young son named Finlay.
She said: “Going through labour is hard enough when you have a healthy baby at the end of it. But going through labour in order to give birth to a baby that has already died is excruciating. I did it twice."
“I think of my boys every day and without Tommy’s research and expertise, I know that Finlay wouldn’t be here.”
In addition to their pioneering research into miscarriage, stillbirth and premature birth, the charity offers free pregnancy information and advice, delivered by a team of experienced midwives.
But none of this would be possible without the ongoing support of the public and organisations like UK Healthcare.
As a leading provider of personal and corporate health cash plans, UK Healthcare offers various levels of cover, which allow plan holders to claim back cash spent on a wide range of medical services, including dental and optical checkups, X-Rays, health screenings, medical prescriptions and hospital stays, up to agreed policy limits.
The company also supports a number of important UK charities and healthcare institutions, including the Tommy’s pregnancy health charity. Last year, UK Healthcare raised more than £56,000 for health related charities. It was a record breaking year of charity work, but one that they intend to improve upon further in 2013.
