Asons Solicitors Calls for Asbestos Awareness on Action Mesothelioma Day 2013
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 3 July 2013 -- According to Rochdale Online, there has been a significant increase in cancer deaths caused by asbestos over the last five years. In 2012, in Greater Manchester alone, 138 people were diagnosed with mesothelioma (1).
Mesothelioma is a rare and incurable form of cancer, caused almost exclusively through the inhalation and retention of asbestos fibres. The condition mostly affects those individuals who worked within roles that involved the use of asbestos, however, it has also been known to affect individuals who spent many years employed within an asbestos-contaminated environment.
Action Mesothelioma Day is held on the first Friday of July each year to raise awareness of mesothelioma. The special event aims to remember those who have died from the condition, and to promote better treatment and care for the victims and their families.
People who have been affected by mesothelioma and others asbestos-related diseases are invited to join the event on Friday 5th July at 12.30pm in Lincoln Square (Brazennose Street Opposite Manchester Town Hall.) where doves will be released by the families of those affected by mesothelioma. At 1pm, the group will be involved in a public meeting held at Manchester Town Hall, where the General Secretary of Unite the Union, Len McCluskey, will join the discussion title “Asbestos – Protecting Workers Today” (2).
Graham Dring, co-ordinator of Greater Manchester Asbestos Victims Support Group (GMAVSG) made the following statement:
“This shocking increase in mesothelioma diagnoses in Greater Manchester is testimony to the long history of asbestos use in our area and the terrible consequences of that history. It is a truly awful increase in this fatal cancer.” (1)
Commenting on the research, Asons Executive Thomas Fairclough:
“Action Mesothelioma Day is a very important date. It helps to raise awareness about asbestos-related illnesses, such as mesothelioma and asbestosis. Hopefully, this year many people will come together to remember those who have died from mesothelioma in Greater Manchester.”
“Here at Asons, we deal with cases when individuals seek asbestosis compensation; often these are the result of poor working conditions, where an environment is not regulated. Their employers failed to provide adequate protection, nor warn their employees about the dangers of asbestos exposure; it is shocking to think how easily our clients suffering could have been avoided.”
Asons Solicitors have a dedicated team of industrial disease specialists dealing with cases of asbestos related diseases, giving people legal advice, particularly in the area of asbestos claims. Exposure to asbestos can be deadly, and Asons urge anyone who feels they may have been exposed to consult their GP immediately and contact an industrial disease specialist for legal representation.
