Birthing Injuries a Worry at Bolton Hospital, Asons Solicitors Comment
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 10 July 2013 -- As reported by the Bolton News, during his birth, Ahmed was starved of oxygen after doctors failed pick up on vital signals while monitoring his heartbeat. Subsequently, doctors spent nine minutes resuscitating him, following his birth in March 2012 (1).
Bolton Coroners court heard from doctors at Royal Bolton Hospital, stating that they did everything within their power during and after his birth to help save his life. (1).
Contrary to these claims, it has been found that the tests used to monitor Ahmed’s heart rate during his mother’s labour were allegedly misinterpreted, this meant that the nurses caring for him failed to consult the expertise of a senior doctor, skills and knowledge that could have potentially saved Ahmed Mohammed’s life. (1).
Employee of medical negligence solicitors, Asons, Suzanne Yates made the following statement:
“There is a clear missed opportunity here, that if taken, Ahmed’s life could have been saved. It is a terrible shame that a mother has lost her new born son, because of preventable mistakes that the hospital have made. It shouldn’t be happening in the NHS, and I sincerely hope it never happens again”.
According to The Bolton News, concerns have been raised as to why staff found the heart rate to be normal, with no cause for concern, when the review conducted by coroner’s court discovered that his test results were classified at the most serious level (1). If these tests had been analysed properly, it would have prompted the doctor to induce a further blood test, which would have made it clear that Ahmed Mohammed was suffering from a lack of oxygen (1).
Looking into the potential causes of death, the inquest heard how tests revealed that problems began around 4:50am, however, it was noted that he wasn’t delivered until 8.36am. While a coroner has stated that it isn’t entirely possible to say whether or not Ahmed would have suffered from birth injuries had the critical issues been noticed earlier, it was likely that he had been suffering for an extended period of time (1).
Deputy coroner, Alan Walsh, concluded that Ahmed died “As a consequence of perinatal asphyxia leading to severe hypoxic ischemic encephalopathy after opportunities to carry out further investigations in relation to clarify whether he was suffering from hypoxia were not taken prior to his birth”.(1)
According to The Bolton News, in an attempt to stop fatal errors such as these from happening in the future, Dr Anthony Tomlinson relayed to the court the provisions he has put in place since the incident occurred last year (1). He spoke about a computerised system that has been introduced to accurately monitor a child’s heartbeat remotely, allowing doctors to decide whether or not a case is in need of further evaluation. Staff in the hospital are also being given further training, help prevent the incident being repeated (1).
Asons Executive, Suzanne Yates, continued to say:
“It gives me hope for the future of our health service, that Bolton hospital have taken direct action in order to prevent anything like this tragic death from happening again. When people fail to confront hospitals about their deficiencies, disasters such as these will only be repeated. Now that the inquest has found that the cause of death was preventable, I hope Ms Mohammed calls on the support of a medical negligence solicitor to aid her in getting justice for the loss of her son”.
Avoidable birthing injuries can be ruled as a form of medical negligence, in which case a victim of such a tragedy may be entitled to make a claim for birthing injury compensation. Anyone who may have been subjected to the same events as the Mohammed family should contact a medical negligence solicitor such as Asons, to find out if there is eligibility to make a claim.
