...Dervishes, reed flute and rock and roll…a festival like no other!
Held on the beautiful estate of Chisholme House deep in the hills of the Scottish Borders, musicians, writers, poets and dancers will gather with festival-goers for a weekend of performance, art, film and theatre.
The Rumi Festival will open on Friday evening with a solo concert by Kudsi Erguner, one of the world’s foremost masters of the Turkish reed flute (ney), while on Saturday evening, a Whirling Dervish Sema with musicians direct from Istanbul will present their strikingly beautiful turn.
Joining the line-up in this both profound and light-hearted event will be the award-winning Scottish folk musician Mairi Campbell, sixties rock legend Arthur Brown of Crazy World fame, the Vastearth Orchestra, Zendeh Delan, a 14 strong young dance group from Iran, and stand-up comedian Trevor Locke
There will be a books and poetry tent, and writers Alan Williams and Roderick Grierson from the Rumi Institute will give talks, as will Muriel Maufroy, author of the novel Rumi’s Daughter. And British sculptor Emily Young will speak about her internationally renowned carving in stone.
There will be participatory workshops for young people lead by The Young Actors Company, and a kid’s tent for young children. The Beshara School is well known for its good food, and the Festival promises to be an enjoyable weekend for families and people of all ages. Free for children under 16.
There will be a shuttle bus to and from Hawick. Yurts and camping facilities are available on the estate. Volunteer opportunities at the Festival are still available.
As Rumi says:
'Come, come, whoever you are
Wanderer, worshipper, lover of leaving
Ours is not a caravan of despair
Even if you have broken your vows a thousand times
It doesn't matter
Come, yet again, come.'
The Rumi Festival is hosted by the Beshara School: http://www.beshara.org.
It takes place at Chisholme House and Estate, Roberton, Hawick TD9 7PH.
It will start Friday evening 2 August and runs all weekend.
