Olympics heroes inspires youngsters to get cycling, says Vivastreet
(PRWEB UK) 27 August 2013 -- More and more young biking enthusiasts are signing up to be British Cycling members, with the number of under 18s increasing by 42 per cent in the last year.
Throughout the UK, cycling clubs are noticing a significant boost to its membership – especially amongst young cyclists. British Cycling reported a huge increase in cyclists at all of its 287 Go-Ride clubs throughout the UK; 37 of which were set up in the last 12 months.
British Cycling’s Director of Coaching, Education and Development, John Mills, said: “The Go-Ride programme provides a fun and safe way to introduce young riders to the world of cycle sport. That’s everything from mountain biking and BMX, to the track events the world watched in the London Velodrome last year.
“Success on the podium at the Olympics and the triumphs at the Tour de France have clearly inspired the next generation to get involved – and this interest is still going strong.”
As the majority of Britain’s younger generation continues to express a passion for the sport, this has proved fortuitous for the cycling industry - from rising bicycle sales to an influx in cycling members.
A spokesperson from Vivastreet commented: “We have a lot of appreciation for the Olympics and the Tour de France, and its huge success has played a key role in influencing England’s teens to get back into sport.
“Not only are they practising better health and fitness as a result of seeing role models such as Victoria Pendleton and Bradley Wiggins take home medals for Great Britain, they’re raising awareness of the fantastic benefits cycling has to offer.”
With several teenagers pursuing an interest in cycling, many parents are turning to online outlets for quality secondhand bikes and cycling accessories – including leading free classifieds ads service, Vivastreet.
