‘Pregnant Woman’s Cancer Fears Ignored’ Asons Solicitors Comment on the Prevalence of Cancer Misdiagnosis.
Bolton, UK (PRWEB UK) 3 September 2013 -- According to the Manchester Evening News, Barbara Makovecz’s fears for her health were ignored, despite her doctors being reminded of her previous breast cancer history (1). The circumstances surrounding her cancer misdiagnosis are considered tantamount to clinical negligence.
Allegedly, Mrs Makovecz, aged 44, visited North Manchester General complaining of back pain and trouble breathing. At the time she was 37 weeks pregnant (1).
Despite her husband telling doctors she had already survived breast cancer, allegedly they failed to carry out blood tests and scans, even when directly requested. Barbara was sent home and told to take painkillers (1).
As reported in the Manchester Evening News, still concerned and experiencing a continuation of her symptoms, Mrs Makovecz returned to the hospital the following day. Adamant her back pain stemmed from the strain of coughing, doctors allegedly remained confident in their original diagnosis, refusing to investigate further (1).
Nine days later, as alleged by the Manchester Evening News, she suffered a brain seizure, and was rushed to Saint Mary’s Hospital. Her baby had to be delivered by emergency caesarean, and it was then that doctors discovered tumours in her brain and major organs. Over the following weeks, she continued to suffer brain seizues, losing her memory and the ability of care for her family (1).
Describing the circumstances, her husband, Carl Makovecz, made the following statement (1)-
“I took her to North Manchester General and both times explained she had had cancer before. The pain had got so bad she was in agony, but doctors just told us to go home and take painkillers. Then she had a brain seizure at home and doctors at St Mary’s said the only way to save the baby was with an emergency caesarean.
“If she had been diagnosed earlier she might not have had the seizures and lost her memory. I just want the hospital to learn from what happened so another family don’t go through what we have.”
Unfortunately, attempts at radiation therapy were unsuccessful, and she died of the disease eight weeks later (1).
Considering the prevalence of cancer misdiagnosis, Asons Executive, Laura Williams –
“At Asons Solicitors, we often see medical claims where patients have felt that their doctors dismissed their concerns, leading to a delay in diagnosis. Cancer Misdiagnosis levels are frightening high, we often handle clinical negligence claims where a prompt diagnosis could have made a world of difference.
“Some patients are only being diagnosed when their cancer has become too progressive to be treated effectively. Misdiagnosis compensation can never balance the damage done, but an admittance of guilt, and an assurance that lessons have been learnt, can be of comfort to the family.”
In the event that you consider yourself to have been subject to cancer misdiagnosis, you must seek legal advice as quickly as possible. Taking action can prevent the same situation from reoccurring, helping others to avoid injury in future.
If you, or someone you know, have suffered as a result of clinical negligence, then you may be able to make a claim for NHS compensation.
