Psychological Benefits of Singing Could Lead to Happier Classrooms
London, United Kingdom (PRWEB UK) 7 February 2014 -- A recent report presented at the annual British Psychological Society conference in New York, highlights the benefits of singing to psychological health. The online survey of 375 participants conducted by Oxford Brookes University reported higher levels of well-being as the result of actively participating in a choir. The study also found that singing in a choir was “significantly” more effective at promoting well-being than other group activities, such as participating in team sport.
Teaching management specialist Michael Park has seen first-hand the impact performing arts can have on morale in UK classrooms. His London-based company, Performance Solutions Management, is dedicated to bringing West End performers into schools and colleges to host interactive workshops.
“Through my experience working with teachers and headmasters, I’ve seen how singing can have remarkable benefits, “says Park. “It triggers higher production of endorphins or ‘feel good’ hormones in the body, bringing a sense of community and positivity to the classroom.”
“Students are under a lot of pressure both in their school lives and at home and can really benefit from the psychological benefits of singing. Incorporating choir, for example, into school curriculums is a fun and social way of stimulating the endocrine system, which is linked to our sense of emotional wellbeing and happiness,” Park added.
With years of experience working with top West End productions, Park believes these findings support the need for a greater presence of performing arts, namely singing and dancing, in educational programmes across the UK.
