Exclusive new white paper: Are MNOs Ready to Enable the Internet of Things? | FC Business Intelligence
London, UK (PRWEB UK) 18 November 2014 -- There is an intense battle developing between telecoms and technology groups as to who will enable the internet of things. (FT, October 2014)
In an interview with FC Business Intelligence for an exclusive white paper, Ludovic Lassauce the Head of Enterprise Marketing for IoT at technology giant Ericsson states that MNOs need to adapt their business models to capitalize on the scale and growth of the Internet of Things; “IoT and M2M will change operators’ business models. M2M is not just about selling SIM cards. Rather, it is about integrating a network into a customer’s business process, and understanding what value that creates for the customer.”
Companies like Sigfox, who have created the only company providing cellular connectivity specifically for the Internet of Things, suggest that mobile network operators know that their existing connectivity solutions only address part of the market. Head of Marketing and Communication for Sigfox, Thomas Nicholls, believes that “it is completely impossible to claim the existing connectivity solutions will connect fifty billion objects in 2020."
Further to the doubts around current MNO business models suiting the Internet of Things, Richard Cornish, Head of IoT at Xchanging: “In most cases the management structures of MNOs have yet to grasp the value proposition of the IoT.”
With such skepticism about the ability of mobile network operators to enable the internet of things, what role will they play in the future of 50 billion connected devices.
Telefonica, named as one of the top operators in IoT, believe that they are very well placed to grasp the opportunity of the Internet of Things. Simon Boyd, Telefonica’s Channel M2M Business Manager accepts the challenges of MNOs moving beyond providing the SIM card and believes an “ecosystem approach” will be a more creative way to move forward “leading to genuinely news services and indeed new markets."
In such a nascent industry there are no sure wins as to which companies will dominate the internet of things. However with MNOs being so well placed to succeed, how do they solve the challenges to their business models to enable the internet of things?
