It was, indeed, a case of an ill wind’s blowing no-one any good in East Kilbride this year.
When Swiss multi-national ABB closed down its Scottish engineering services division at the end of last month, the 17-strong staff and their families were staring at the prospect of a pretty bleak and less than festive Christmas – until out popped the Christmas fairy who introduced himself as one John Welsh and said oh, joy, jollity and prosperity shall be yours for ever after, tra-la!
Executive careers consultancy UK Knack Group said that the suddenly redundant men’s immediate adoption to swell the ranks of Booth Welsh Automation was a logical outcome, as its managing director made the announcement saying, “These people now form the backbone of a new BWA consultancy team, headed by Muir Porter who held the same post at ABB. The knowledge, skill and experience are already in place.”
BWA has performed splendidly for such a young company (only established in 1989) and now employs a staff of 300 at its Stevenston headquarters. John Welsh, company founder and present chairman, says that not only will the ex-ABB crew complement his existing strength, but they’ll enable him to expand more quickly with his engineering and consultancy services.
UK Knack Group notes further in announcing this news that BWA, by making this acquisition, will have strengthened its grasp in process engineering. UK Knack Group’s CEO: “This has to do with the sensitive area of regulating chemical and biological processes in petrochemical, food, pharmaceutical and bio-technical sectors.”
