Research has revealed a 156 per cent rise in UK holidaymaker enquiries for Easter breaks in Scotland compared to last year . With such a significant rise in the interest of holidaying in Scotland, Post Office Travel Insurance is reminding UK travellers that they should have a travel insurance policy in place even when holidaying domestically.

According to Post Office Travel Insurance research, cancellations are the most common reasons for claiming on annual travel insurance policies for UK breaks . Some 84 per cent of UK holidaymakers claimed on their travel insurance because they were unable to travel to their UK holiday destination due to reasons such as illness or changes to personal circumstances .

Travel insurance is essential for UK holidaymakers choosing to fly within the UK. Unexpected flight cancellations, loss or damage to baggage, for example, can all be covered by a travel insurance policy for domestic travel.

Rachel Croft, head of Post Office Travel Insurance, said: "Many people don't consider that they face the same risks when holidaying in the UK as they would abroad and that travel insurance is still needed - things like cancellation, cutting the holiday short and lost belongings can all happen on home turf, so it's worth checking your home or travel insurance policy to see if you will be covered."
