With rumours aloft about the state of General Motors at first glance the future of its European subsidiaries Vauxhall/Opel may appear precarious, although the salient facts can't be ignored; Vauxhall UK is a strong brand with a sizable share of the consumer and light goods vehicle market. With this market position filtering through to board level decision makers a solid technological-led strategy has resulted with some great vehicles keeping the competition at bay.

The new Vauxhall Astra has taken on some of the design features of the much publicised Insignia. A bold distinctive look, brand new chassis matched with a premium spacious cabin make this an altogether more sublime car.

According to Vauxhall engineers, development has involved over 600 hours in the wind tunnel, benefiting performance, economy and overall refinement. The steeply-raked windscreen and sloping rear roofline perfectly compliment the wing-shaped light signatures and body blade. Passenger comfort has also been improved with a 71mm longer wheelbase and the option of Vauxhall's smart FlexRide system, which offers drivers three unique damper settings, standard, sport and tour, whilst remaining fully adaptable to changes in driving style and conditions. Other innovative options already available is AFL (Adaptive Forward Lighting), featuring bi-xenon lighting that changes its luminescence and focus to best suit the driving environment.

To differentiate between model ranges on issues of power and economy the new Astra will benefit from the introduction of a Euro 5 compliant, 140PS turbo-charged, 1.4l petrol engine providing great fuel efficiency with a modest carbon footprint. This will join three further petrol engines, ranging from 100-180 PS and four diesel engines ranging from 95-160 PS.

The new model will initially be rolled out as a 5 door hatchback later on this year but if it proves as successful as industry experts predict it surely won't be long before the new design becomes available on the Astra Twintop convertible and popular Vauxhall Astravan.

Industry journalist Caroline Nicholls says, "Vauxhalls continued commitment to engine downsizing without trouncing performance is a master stroke. Running costs and low emissions are at the forefront of consumers mind. This car is for those who want style and power without compromising on costs and ethics."
