Despite the Weather, Business is Blooming for Urban Design Flowers
(PRWEB UK) 9 July 2013 -- Last month’s torrential downpours and the coldest winter in a century have wreaked havoc for the UK’s flower market but Birmingham florist, Urban Design Flowers has found a novel way to overcome flower shortages.
After an increase in severe weather conditions throughout 2013, the UK flower market has been badly affected by delayed flower growth patterns. Birmingham florist, Urban Design Flowers is keeping up with demand by importing more varieties through its international supply chain.
“We noticed a significant drop in availability of certain flowers earlier in the year and the unsettled conditions in June have been disastrous for British growers,” says Urban Design Flowers owner, Steve Betts.
“Fortunately we were able to call on our international supply chain and import more flowers from Holland,” continues Betts.
Although drier than last year, June 2013 has witnessed a variety of weather conditions, from highs of 26 degrees to torrential downpours in some areas. Glastonbury Festival got off to a typically wet start, while the summer solstice weekend saw most of the UK enduring wet and windy conditions that reminded many of last year’s ‘damp squib summer’.
Reports show that inconsistent weather patterns and delayed flower growth are causing a shortage of essential stocks for florists throughout the country. By identifying this trend early, Urban Design Flowers has been able to supply its customers with their favourite flowers.
“The bad weather may have affected supply, but it hasn’t reduced demand. We’re seeing more orders for birthday, wedding and funeral flowers this summer,” comments Betts.
The Met Office reports the UK has seen its coldest spring since 1962, with rain and snow affecting spring blooms including daffodils, snow drops, and tulips. This as a result is leading to late blooming in areas of the UK which have been affected the most by the adverse weather.
