Undoubtedly the major attraction in Jordan, Petra is an unforgettably dramatic 2000-year-old city carved from red sandstone in valleys hidden behind mountain peaks.
Jordan has a wealth of other historical sites, including the well-preserved Roman city of Jerash – widely considered to be the best preserved Roman city outside of Italy and is to this day an important venue for concerts and other activities. There is also the Christian town of Madaba with its Byzantine mosaic artworks.
With its sheer cliffs and red sands, the ‘vast, echoing and god-like’ expanses of Wadi Rum – where David Lean filmed Lawrence of Arabia – presents the classic desert picture of Jordan, and is the starting point for trips to savour the tranquillity of the desert, and the hospitality of the traditional Bedouin.
Less well-known are the gentle northern hills around the Ajloun Woodlands, where you can walk for days through flower-strewn meadows and cool, shady forests and the tranquil Dana Nature Reserve, encompassing highland orchards down to the sandy desert floor of Wadi Araba.
After all that adventure, the town of Aqaba provides an ideal location for rest and relaxation on the shores of the Red Sea. Here you will find coral reefs and sea life. Or there is the unique environment of the Dead Sea – the lowest place on earth and an ideal environment to soothe body and soul. The unique properties of the salt water of the Dead Sea, together with the famous mud, combine to provide visitors with all the benefits of the largest natural spa in the world.
