FireWorks.co.uk Attempts to Trademark the Word “FireWorks”
(PRWEB UK) 2 November 2017 -- The website says that since they purchased the business 2 months ago. They have been handling numerous complaints about fireworks bought from other sites. This is thought to have had a knock on effect to their website and brand.
Last month they were in contact with Trademark professionals who explained to them that they would succeed if they applied for a trademark due to them owning the website FireWorks.co.uk
Company spokesman Richard Barker said “We spent a lot of money on the legal advice regarding the trademark. At first we were sceptical about trademarking a word like "Firework" but in the end we decided to pay because it would help us protect our brand.”
If the website is successful in its application, it would mean that any business in the UK that uses or wants to use the word “FireWorks” on their products would need to obtain permission from them first and pay a licensing fee. They insist that it is all about protecting their brand and maintaining safety standards – not about raising money from fees.
With the trademark, the company can perform their own tests on products to make sure they are of a certain standard before being sold to the public.
Richard Barker later said “people think this is about the fees, but it isn’t. Businesses can use the word “Pyrotechnics” on their box because it is generic. Fireworks, is our brand, not generic and therefore we have a right to protect it.”
The company expects a lot of people to object to the trademark application. The Intellectual Property Office refused to comment other than to say “we do not comment on individual applications”
